Big Sur, CA

In 2008, I spent 2 months driving across the USA from Maryland to California, taking the southern route. Check out my adventures.

After leaving Pismo Beach, CA, we were encouraged to take Route 1 north up the coast to San Fransisco. Sure, you could take the 5 (in CA, everyone prefaces road numbers with “the”) and be there in just a few hours. Or you could take the scenic route and create memories to last a lifetime.

On Route 1, the road is literally at the edge of the cliff! There are no guardrails and you could go over the edge without a firm grasp on the wheel. So you’re basically holding your breath while seeing breathtaking views of the ocean. There aren’t many gas stations or businesses along the way, so it’s best to be prepared.
